THE PRODIGAL SON RETURNS FROM HILTON HEAD SC,  a worn, torn and depleted man after 11 hours of oncourt advanced skills instruction from a kick-ass, no mercy Coach.  Each of the 12 advanced skill sets were evaluated and graded while demonstrating them in a mock doubles game format outdoors in the hot humid SC heat.  No shade, no place to sit and no fun.  Each skill set had to be executed according to 4.0+ standards.  No I am not kidding, Nor am I a 4.0 skill level player, and after 6 hours I began to wonder why I was even here.  There were 14 qualified participants who entered the pickleball thunder dome, and at the end of a torturous day only 4 left the thunder dome victorious.  However, I became well schooled in the art of the 5 stroke net game.  I also learned about the effects of humidity on indoor and outdoor balls.  I also learned that the drop shot should not be taught unless a player is at least a 3.0 skill level. LYNN COBURN, PROFESSIONAL PICKLEBALL COACH, ALL SKILL LEVELS, BETTER THAN ALL THE REST! Lynn Coburn is one of Maryland's best kept pickleball secrets. Lynn resides in Baltimore County, and coaches pickleball at several local private racquet clubs. Lynn also conducts skill specific clinic for small groups in the surrounding area who prearrange court space and time. Aside from her professional teaching career, and her professional pickleball coaching career, Lynn is a competitive tournament player at the 4.5 skill level. She recently won Gold in Pittsburg and her successful tournament history speaks for itself. But Lynn is reserved and not one to promote her self, nor does she ever boast about her competitive successes. SO YOU WANT TO PLAY PICKLEBALL ON CLAY COURTS....GOOD LUCK! Playing pickleball on clay courts is a novel idea. In reality it could be a heck of a lot of fun and present players with a challenge to their abilities to adjust their game to the new surface. If I had the opportunity to play pickleball on a clay court, I would do it in a 'New York minute.' I would ellllxpect that there isn't a designate clay court strictly for pickleball. Clay courts are cooler, easier on the feet, and reward finesse and controlled shots versus power. The bounce is lower on the clay, so a hard-hit groundstroke is a lower percentage shot. These courts are considered the slowest surface in racquet sports including pickleball. Thanks to Baltimore County Recs and Parks Administrator Mr. Barry Williams and the Honorable Kevin Kamenetz 12th Baltimore County Executive, 2010 to 2018 deceased, the Baltimore County Pickleball Community is in the process of acquiring 60+ more outdoor places to play pickleball.  The County Government minimized cost to maximize recreational oppor5unities by identifying underused tennis courts through Baltimore County by adding permanent pickleball court lines.  I attended an open play at the North East Regional Recreation Center, Perring Parkway and Oakleigh Rd today to play pickleball on their newly lined pickleball courts.  Outside it was 98° inside it was in the upper 70°'s. Recently, when I attended a local public funded Pickleball Open Play Program  I was somewhat disappointed as to how the rotation of game play was being conducted. I was told by some of newer players,  that the better players would not play with them, and they were experiencing problems getting enough players for a game. I played several games with these individuals and found that they had ample playing skills to participate in Open Play Pickleball. To be fair and accurate, this occurred  with an hour of the last round of play, and some of the  other players had left.  But there was still ample numbers of players hanging at one of  the courts. SELECTING THE RIGHT BALL,  INDOOR Vs OUTDOOR, COLOR  Vs OPAGUE 2018 REVISED USAPA/IFP Pickleball Official Tournament Rulebook, Ball selection is clearly the responsibility of the Tournament Director.  However in non-officiated play, the USAPA has suggested that ball selection be made from the Approved Balls List taking into the  consideration the safety, visual capabilities, styles of play and the skill levels of players. 2018 REVISED USAPA/IFP Pickleball Official Tournament Rulebook, Section 2, COURT and EQUIPMENT Rule 2.D. Ball Figure 2-2 footnote.  Figure 2-2 display a ball customarily used for indoor play, and a ball customarily used for outdoor. HOWEVER, ALL APPROVED BALLS ARE ACCEPTABLE FOR INDOOR OR OUTDOOR PLAY.  An outdoor court surface on an indoor court indoors does not require the use of an outdoor ball.
