PICKLEBALL SPIN CONTINUED PART 2

 SPIN CONTINUED PART 2

Defense against spin. Learn to read the paddle motion of your opponent upon hitting the ball and the ball in flight
The higher level of play the more the spin game dominates play. The lower the skill level the less likely spin is utilized. There are 3 major effects of spin:
  1. How the ball travels thru the air.
  2. How the ball bounces on the court.
  3. How the ball rebounds off the paddle.
As previously cited there are 5 basic types of spin, top spin, back spin, right hand spin, left hand spin, and under spin.
Players often confuse top spin with underspin. So lets discuss the difference.
Top spin, the swing comes from back of the ball to high shoulder height. The paddle head faces straight down pointed at the court. The paddle face is angled back slightly with a bend in the wrist. The paddle contacts the ball below the midpoint on the back side of the ball. Top spin > low to high swing. Top spin balls dip and curve downward in flight. Top spin has a low and accelerating bounce, Top spin pops upward and increases speed after contacting your opponent's paddle. Top spin is often utilized on a serve. To return a top spin ball, use a closed paddle face with any spin swing.
Under spin, the swing comes from the back of the ball to the shoulder. The paddle head faces down pointed at the court. The paddle contacts the ball at midpoint on the back side of the ball with a straight wrist. Under spin balls are flatter than top spin with less curve and drop. Under spin has a lower bounce than top spin and also accelerates of the bounce. Underspin also pops upward but not as much as top spin.
Under spin is used more from mid-court up to the NVZ. To return a under spin ball, use a straight (no angle) paddle face with paddle pointing down to the court, and apply a top spin or back spin slice.
If you are going to apply spin in your game, you must be consistent and select the type of spin that will be most effective to misdirect your opponent. Spin will also force your opponent to change the way he or she was going to hit the ball because they now have to counter the effects of spin to keep the ball in play.
WARNING: Do not use spin until you have thoroughly mastered this skill. Spin skills require practice, practice, practice under a coach who is willing to teach it to you. Many coaches avoid teaching spin because it consumes a lot of time and practice especially when doing a clinic. Most coaches are time oriented. You pay for 1.5 to 3.0 hours and that's what you get.
To be a good player you don't need to use spin. I do not use spin against top players. I use spin against average players. I have a saying about spin for the average player: IF YOU PLAY THE GAME WITH SPIN, YOU WILL LOOSE THE GAME BY YOUR OWN UNFORCED ERRORS.
I will continue this post to cover the remaining types of spin in detail.
